Second Wind
This body of work is intended to disrupt the false assumptions we have about aging. In our society, healthy aging means being active, independent, physically and cognitively robust. We equate any amount of dependence as failure. But these expectations are unrealistic. We need to replace this notion with appreciation of the reciprocity involved in giving and receiving care as part of healthy relationships. If we can let go of the myth that we are always in control, it becomes easier to let go of the self-imposed shame that keeps us from reaching out to others for comfort, support and help.
These pictures reflect a strengths-based approach to aging, where successful aging is defined differently for each individual. Where elders are revered for their roles and contributions as peace makers, wisdom givers and legacy creators.
Aging is living and old means long-lived. Death is not a failure. We can empower ourselves to accept, and even embrace, the process of aging and dying.
I believe there is joy to be found in every season of life if you know where to look. It is my hope that these pictures point the way toward that joy.
