I'm taking a photography class at the Visual Arts Center in Richmond, Virginia. Our homework assignment for this first week includes taking portraits. The hardest part of this assignment is working up the courage to ask someone if I may take their picture. The trick is to capture not just what they look like, but who they are. And this requires that I make a connection. I talk to this young woman who works at Riverby Books from time to time. She is a fine writer of poetry who will pursue her Master of Fine Arts degree this fall. And she graciously agreed to be the center of attention in this portrait.
