on being an amateur

I'm often asked why I don't charge money for my photography, why I don't turn my hobby into a business. In the past, I've felt a little defensive about such questions, as though I needed to explain why I make these pictures, what they mean to me, and how I see the world. There is this nagging little part of me that knows that sometimes my self-worth gets tangled up with what I accomplish or how much money I make. And then I go back to a simple piece of advice from my friend Cathy, "Remember that if you enjoy doing something then it is not a waste of time no matter what others think or say."

It‘s about time we started to take photography seriously and treat it as a hobby.
