I've read countless self-help articles on mindfulness, and I always chuckle when they admonish me to sink deeply into the every day chores of life like ironing or washing dishes or cleaning the bathroom. I understand the intention and even respect the premise but it's often hard to put into practice. But what does help me - to find joy in doing the things I have to do - is light. Wherever there is light, and it's accompanying darkness, I am drawn into the contrast and the mundane work feels less like a burden. Light keeps me company as I go through the daily routine.
